excited about the debates. >> jamie: this is sobering, gas prices in california have risep to an all-time high. according to triple-a, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline, climbing 4 cents overnight, after passing a four-year high one day earlier. what is behind the dramatic surge? brenda buttner, fox news business correspondent is here. let me throw out a couple of other figures. an average of 46 cents up over the last four day, including a record 19 cents joust friday, according to triple-a, that's 50 cents more than last week. what is going on? >> incredibly dramatic numbers. the basic thing is a temporary reduction in supply. we have seen an exxon mobile refinery close that is up again, that may bring the price down. we saw a chevron pipeline that pumps crude oil from southern to northern california, shut down. and then there is the issue of cleaner-burning fuel in california. basically, it can't use fuel from other states. so it is in essence, an independent market, a very volatile and fragile one. so refineries have stopped producing a lot of gas because they're

. >>> right now california is the most expensive place for gas in the nation. and this morning our governor jerry brown is taking action all in an effort to drive down some of the costs. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran reports on the governor's idea to ease record high prices. >> reporter: good morning. the governor is asking state regulators to release a less expensive blend but experts say even with that move we won't see prices drop right away. this winter blend comes out on november 1. it will bring up gas supplies 8 to 10% and might drop gas prices 15 to 20 cents a gallon. but it could take a week before we see any changes. according to aaa, prices today are at record highs. in san francisco, you're paying $4.73 for a gallon of regular. and in san jose and oakland it's $4.67. our state supplies were cut short after richmond's chevron refinery fire in august and last week a power failure knocked out an exxon refinery in southern california. >> we had a number of disruptions happen at the same time. california always runs a very tight supply-demand because because we use a different blend o

[applause] >> moderator: okay, here we go. um, we have as dr. kimble had mentioned, we have c-span, we also have kdtv, kclu and ventura county star all live streaming, so the debate starts at 7:15. so let me quickly go through the ground rules. we flipped a coin to determine the order in which there would be opening and closing remarks and who would start and who would finish. in the opening two minutes from each candidate, it would open with assemblywoman brownley, and then that would close with senator strickland, and can that same -- and that same, then it would be reversed in the closing. it would be senator strickland and then assemblywoman brownley. once we go through the two-minute opening, then a panel, tim hearth and henry durbroff and i will pres
prices in california hitting an all time high. aaa reporting that a cost for gallon of regular gas jumped 12 cents overnight bringing the total 4.61, that 80 cents higher than the national average. is there any relief in sight. dominic is financial advisor joins us. hopefully, there is good news. first of all, why the high prices? what is causing this? >> again we had a similar problem. there is short term problems that are kind of unique to california. they had another refinery outage earlier in the week and that caused really shortages in the summer blend they need. earlier firings in august. the sum of perfect storm incidents have created a short term problem. hopefully we'll see relief in coming weeks. >> heather: there is simple explanation and real ex pla nation? >> the real explanation. on the average californians pay dollar per gallon 25% more than the national average. a lot of it has to do with regulation and taxation. they have created a lot of their own problems. on the average, californians pay over 50 cents a gallon in tax, compared 15 cents to new jersey, for example. they

. this is a live look from los angeles as the shuttle makes its way to its new home at the california science center. and look at all the people out tonight in l.a. watching that. it's taken two days for the shuttle to make the 12-mile trip. crews had to maneuver it through the streets of los angeles as you saw there. nbc's stephanie stanton talked to excited fans who lined up to get a glimpse of the shuttle. >> reporter: thousands of excited fans lined the streets for day two of the shuttle's slow crawl through the streets of l.a. >> this is history. >> reporter: at top speeds of just 2 miles an hour, officials navigated the 170,000-pound shuttle through the city, carefully avoiding trees, street lights, and even coming within inches of some buildings. why'd you want to come see it? >> because it looks really big. and cool. >> oh my god. huge. really huge. it's amazing to see that this was in space and now it's here in our city. >> reporter: last night engineers were faced with one of their most difficult maneuvers yet, getting "endeavour" across the 405 freeway. this morning, the shuttle ma

at home for joining us. we are broadcasting not from new york, but from california. i did a book event in santa barbara yesterday for my book "drift." i spoke to a room of about 2,000 people, which is unnerving if. you're not used to doing that sort of thing. and i talked about my book. i got asked a question at this event about the political impact of the first presidential debate. and the way it went seems to be important in understanding the temperature of the country on the presidential race right now. most everybody agrees that the first debate was won quite handedly by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound bite. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate
